Looks like we're going downtown... to Dentaltown this week!  Howard Farran, also known as The Mayor of Dentaltown, finally had the chance to appear on our podcast.  Since we've literally been bugging him to be on the show since our launch back in February... we just had to make this a two part episode.  So, without further ado... here's Part One of our interview with Howard Farran.

Ever heard of a dentist placing his own implant in his own mouth?  Well, prepare to have your minds blown— and probably cringe a little.  Daniel Hatch, DDS and Jerome Cha, DDS joined us in Podcast Studio 1-A for our latest episode.  Both were taking a continued education course from Justin over the weekend.  Dr. Hatch joins us from Montrose, Colorado and Dr. Cha joins us from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Dr. Cha is a passionate dentist practicing in Tulsa, but he is also a very passionate photographer.  He's quite good too!  He recently took a trip to Iceland, where he took some amazing photographs.  He goes into how he became interested in photography, the details that go along with it and why we should all have that one hobby that gets us out of the house and out of the office.

Alright, brace yourselves for this one.  Dr. Hatch is a great dentist, sure.  But he truly achieved notoriety due to his YouTube video of him placing an implant in his OWN MOUTH.  Crazy, right?  He goes into the story on our podcast so LISTEN TO HIS STORY FIRST AND THEN... You gotta check out this video of Dr. Hatch placing his own implant.  Check it out on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVKCFHgUikM

To learn more about Dr. Hatch's dental practice, All In One Dental, check out his website at http://www.aiodental.com/

To learn more about Dr. Cha's dental practice, visit http://www.hoperestorative.com/

Thank you so much, gentlemen, for sharing your stories with us!  We'll see you next time!

Cheers

You ready for this one?  We had not only a very cool, laid back guy on the latest episode, but he just so happens to be a celebrity— a legit celebrity.  Check it out!

A direct quote from the bio section of Randy's Twitter handle: "Part of the hot Teen Mom 2 grandparent crew. By hot, I mean sweaty."  Oh, and he's a general detnist in Vermillion, South Dakota too.  But, we're obviously more interested in the fact that HE WAS ON MTV's TEEN MOM!!!!!!!

All joking aside, this was a really fun podcast that touched on the Teen Mom fame that Randy has experienced, but we also talked about his experience in dentistry and how he got wrapped up in this crazy world.  What's even better is that he was outside for this whole thing— made us very jealous since we were locked up in this sweaty podcast studio the whole time.

Fun fact: We were Randy's first podcast.  How special.  Here's what he had to say about it on Twitter: "My first appearance on a podcast. If you are into semi-unprofessional talk by dentists"  Semi-unprofessional talk by dentists is damn right, Houska!

You can, of course, watch Randy Houska and his daughter Chelsea on MTV's original series, Teen Mom 2.  If you are curious about Randy's dental practice, check it out by going to http://www.houskadental.com/

We can't thank you enough for taking time out of your lovely, quiet evening just to chat with the three stooges over here in Rapid City.  You have an inspiring story and a pretty darn successful practice!  We'll stay in touch for sure.  Come out for some pheasant hunting with us!

Cheers!

Today's special guest was none other than Dr. Snapchat himself, Dr. Daniel Rubinshtein— straight from Brooklyn, New York!  Dr. Rubinshtein is one of the most passionate and visionary dentists we have had the opportunity to have on our podcast.  He is a cosmetic dentist that has worked in New York and in Florida, but has recently gained notoriety for using Snapchat to broadcast his work to the masses.  We talk about some of the trends of social media and how it can make you, the dentist, all the more attractive to potential patients.

Dr. Rubinshtein graduated from the prestigious Yale University, where he completed his general practice residency. Dr. Rubinshtein also is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry where he received his doctor of dental surgery degree. At NYUCD, Dr. Rubinshtein was a member of the Aesthetic Honors program where he displayed his artistic and keen eye for beauty. He won first place in the Empire State Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry smile makeover campaign, a prestigious recognition in the dental community, and placed among the top ranking dentists at the national American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Conference.

Dr. Rubinshtein’s desire to help others who are less fortunate has been apparent in his involvement with many charities from oral cancer to feeding the homeless. His time spent on several dental outreaches that served under privileged communities throughout the country, displays his genuine concern for not only the art of dentistry but also the importance of dental health. He also has been part of the growing and exceptional program LEAP, where Dr. Rubinshtein has been invited on numerous occasions to fly out to UCLA and be a mentor for students looking for leadership and motivation.

Dr. Rubinshtein was born to two parents who are dentists themselves. Thus, the innate ability is not only nature, but nurture as well. He developed a passion for dentistry at a very early age, growing up and learning alongside his parents in their Brooklyn dental practice. He would spend summers at their practice zealous to learn and please, and acquiring the dual ability of the meticulous craft of dental artistry and the gentle care patients need.

Check out Dr. Rubenshtein's beautifully crafted website at http://www.drrubinshtein.comyou can also send him an e-mail at mysmile@drrubinshtein.com.  You can find him on instagram @dr_rubinshtein and, of course, on Snapchat @drubinshtein !  Thank you so much for being a guest on our show, Dr. Rubninshtein.  We'll Snapchat you sometime!

Cheers!

We had the incredible pleasure of having Lieutenant Commander Stephen Johndreau join us straight from the Marine Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina for our recent podcast.  Topics include employment opportunities in the United States military, the current state of unemployment in this country, the challenges of finding good employees for your practice, a brief rant from Justin and the dangers of cat scratch fever.

Stephen has an amazing history with the United States Marine Corps. and his message is very inspirational!

Thank you so much, Stephen, for taking the time to join us on the show.  Fun fact: we originally had Stephen as a guest for our seventeenth episode but some unfortunate audio issues on our end rendered the episode intolerable to listen through.  The fact is that Stephen had way too important of a message and was way too good of a guest to toss to the curb, so we had to have him on again.  So, extra thanks goes to Stephen for being patient with us and coming back on the show.

If you have any questions concerning opportunities that may be available for you in the United States military, please feel free to e-mail Stephen at stephen_johndreau@hotmail.com.

This is the podcast we've all been waiting for!  We've been hyping this guest up for a few weeks now and finally, Erin Elliot, DDS has arrived.  We had such a blast with her and her partner-in-crime Bri Bove that we're going to go ahead and release two parts to this episode.  Yep, that's right... another two-part podcast!

Dr. Elliott was out here in Rapid City, SD because she was teaching a course on sleep and how it relates to dentists.  She conducted several sleep studies while she was out here and we just had to take advantage and have her on the show!

Part Two will be a follow up after the course had completed.  You know, for some reflection, commentary and, of course, post-course drinks.

Thank you so much for being a loyal fan of our podcast and for being an amazing guest, Erin!  Let's do it again!

Feel free to e-mail Erin with any questions or inquiries at erinelliottdds@gmail.com

Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani joined the worms in podcast studio 1-A for the latest podcast.  After meeting her and chatting with her via Skype, we can easily say Cynthia is our favorite Italian dentist.  She is a very successful dentist in the Bay Area— and we can totally see why!  Not only is she very knowledgeable, focused, driven— all of those make for a great dentist, of course.  But what really resonated with us is her quote, "Smile often and see what happens."  That is a great philosophy for a dentist to embrace.  For everyone to embrace, really.

It was a pleasure having Dr. Brattesani as our guest for this podcast.  We had so much fun getting to know her story!  Thank you, Cynthia!  Until next time—

From Cynthia's website, which can be found at http://www.drcynthiab.com/

Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani, DDS, is fast becoming one of the best-known figures in the dental industry. She has written dozens of articles for professional journals and websites including Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, SideKick, Women's Dental Journal, and she is a frequent lecturer at conferences and dental schools on a variety of topics..

Dr. Brattesani received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1989, and joined the practice of her brother, Steven J. Brattesani in San Francisco and Dr. William van Dyk in the East Bay as an associate the same year.

After working as an associate for more than a decade, Dr. Brattesani opened her own practice in 2002, and it has become one of the fastest-growing dental practices in the Bay area since then.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Dental Association's "Golden Apple" Award for Outstanding New Dentist Leader in 1996, and the U.S. Medal of Merit for outstanding public service for the City of San Francisco Earthquake. In 2015 she was honored with the UCSF 150th Anniversary Alumni Award.

She has served in many positions and remains an active member of The American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the San Francisco Dental Society (SFDS) of which she served as president. Very early in her career, she became a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Brattesani’s passion is innovation serving on many advisory dental boards. Dedicated to the advancement of dentistry, she is a proud member of the Spear Education Faculty Club requiring hundreds of hour of continuing education.

In 2013 she was appointed to the Management Committee of CDA Cares -- managing a dental clinic providing millions of dollars of free dentistry to thousands of the undeserved population. Dr Brattesani was recently quoted in a local dental newsletter stating: “Volunteering for me is a matter of the heart. It offers gifts often disguising themselves in the actual work. It offers me a lesson of humility and the value of courage to make me stand in something that I truly believe in. Volunteering together for the common good allows me to recognize what is truly extraordinary in the world. And once you open your heart----there is no turning back."

In 2015, she was honored with the UCSF 150th Alumni Award, an honor of great distinction.

Some major things happened on tonight's podcast.  Our guest was none other than Jim Perry, the COO and VP of Affordable Dentures and Implants— plus a colleague of Justin's.  He shared plenty of his insight and business acumen— how it relates to dentistry and how dental schools just do not prepare their future doctors properly.  A bit of a bombshell was dropped when his departure from ADI was brought up.  Looks like he's going to dental school!

From Affordable Dentures and Implants:

Since joining Affordable Care in 2001 as director of professional development, James Perry was promoted to vice president of dental placement and, subsequently, to vice president of practice operations before being named chief operating officer. Mr. Perry was responsible for conceptualizing and forming the COO Study Club among a group of his colleagues in the Association of Dental Support Organizations. Prior to Affordable Care, he worked in the executive search industry for a subsidiary of publicly traded company. Mr. Perry holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and an M.B.A from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He is married with three daughters.

The other big reveal?  After 28 episodes, Gabe Olson now officially has a cartoon of himself for our podcast website and promotional material.  Welcome to the family, Gabe.

Now, if only we could get "The Worm" to appear on OUR podcast sometime...

Until next time,

Cheers!

JoAn Majors is a long-time colleague and dear friend of Justin's— and we had the excellent opportunity to have her come visit Podcast Studio 1-A for our latest episode.  JoAn, as you will soon find out, has a firey sense of passion, drive and razor sharp wit.  It was a lot of fun to have her on the show and to have her visit our office here in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Here's a biography about JoAn directly from her website at joanmajors.com:

JoAn Majors has figured out that having great information in a seminar today just isn’t enough. With on line availability consultants, coaches and business folks converging on the dental market, it takes much much more! It is about an experience. Entertainment and education backed by real research are bedrock to all her one day seminars as well as any DBC 2 day Signature Event. All programs start with an in-depth conversation and research on those attending as well as those co-sponsoring. One day events include a pre-lecture dinner meeting with the major players. This allows JoAn to personalize each and every lecture and highlight the unique information based on real research. Her quest to meet and exceed expectations is congruent with her talent to ask each and every audience what they want to walk away with. Much like they ask patient’s in their Texas practice.

Also, if you needed any further proof at how effective of a trainer JoAn Majors is— here's a few testimonies from some of her colleagues that attended her speaking engagements:

"We immediately put JoAns principles to work in our practice and noticed and overwhelming change in case acceptance. Each member of our team have commented on "loving their jobs again"- feeling as thought they have a renewed sense of purpose in our office and tin the field of dentistry. We are no longer treating mouths but developing relationships with our patients, offering them choices and ultimately offering them hope. It is refreshing to come to work everyday! Thank you, JoAn you have inspired us all and sparked a flame in each of us. We look forward to the time we meet again. We would travel twice the distance to learn from you and we encourage every dentist and team to do so..." - Andrea Legault: Dental Spouse & Manager, British Columbia

"JoAn has an exceptional spirit that is infectious and lifts those around her. As importantly, she possesses a wealth of dental practice know-how and experience that is provided to clients with ease and grace. Her systems and methods are useful, unique, accessible and proven through years of implementation and refinement. Over my 20 years in and out of dental practices, I have not met anyone that has more knowledge about what truly makes a successful dental practice. Unlike most, she quickly puts at ease both the dentist and their staff. In addition to access to her critical industry knowledge, she is a wonderful person to be around and makes anyone who meets her simile. She is a wonderful mother, dental spouse and friend. I highly recommend JoAn and hope those reading this are lucky enough to enjoy her services."

- James Dunn: VP – Corporate Development & Pentegra Dental Group, Inc.

You have to check out more about her services and products that can easily change the way JoAn can single-handedly change the way your team operates and grow your business.  She's a truly inspiring force in the world of dentistry!

Thank you so much for spending a few days with us in Rapid City— and thanks for the great podcast, JoAn!  Until next time— cheers!

It's time to go TOTALLY ORAL with The Worms... Oh, and Dr. Lance Timmerman too.

Lance Timmerman was Podcast Studio 1-A's latest guest and, man, was this episode irreverent as hell.  We think some dental topics may have been discussed...??

Jeff was notably missing from this episode due to hurt feelings after being called a Pasty Gangsta on the previous podcast.  Tune in next time to see if he was fired or not.

Definitely give Totally Oral (totallyoral.libsyn.com) a listen on iTunes.  This is the podcast where "Dr. Lance Timmerman discusses the OTHER side of dentistry. Warts and all. Current materials, current methods, old people."  It's pretty good, but it's no Dentists, Implants and Worms.

Oh, and here's a cheap plug for Dr. Timmerman's professional website, www.DrTimmerman.com

Thanks for the laughs, Timmerman!  We'll work on getting you back here in due time.  Cheers!

It's the 25th episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms!  How time has flown by... Remember in our first few episodes we included a shout-out to a fellow dentist who sent us three lovely mugs with our logo and characters on it?  Well, that was Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver from Great Lakes Dentistry in Royal Oak, Michigan and he happens to be our guest for this milestone episode of the show.

Not only is Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver (Dr. SVDV?) known for his excellent work in the world of dentistry (just check out his Google reviews for proof of that!) but he also runs his own, very unique podcast portal specifically for dental podcasts.  It's called Practice in a Pod and it is just a small example of how passionate Dr. SVDV is about dentistry.

We discuss a wide variety of things... the normal BS, some dental stuff, podcast shop-talk, etc.  You'll just have to listen.  We also pay respect to the late Prince with one of Jeff's song choices.  Feel free to skip that.  Too many drinks that evening.

Check out Practice in a Pod at http://practiceinapod.com/ and also check out Shawn's dental practice at https://gldentistry.com/

Thank you so much for being on the show, Shawn!  We'll be sure to have you back in the next 25 episodes.  Cheers!

Podcast Studio 1-A was recently graced with the presence of local pharmacology expert and Medicine Shoppe owner, Dr. Curt Rising— who also happens to be a lifelong friend of Justin's.  Curt gives us some insight into the best practices for prescribing medication in relation to dental work, implant placement and also talks about the recovery process behind oral surgery.  Justin and Curt also discuss the pros and cons, and what their preferences are for certain steroids used in the recovery period after oral surgery.

Definitely check out the Medicine Shoppe in Rapid City, SD if you are looking for a new pharmacy for your personal prescriptions or if you are a local dentist looking for an experienced pharmacist that knows pain management when it comes to dentistry.

Thanks, Dr. Rising, for the awesome time in the studio.  Great information!

"Faster than a speeding jet plane! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!"

Okay, well I don't know about the two parts of that catchphrase, but there is no doubt that burs move faster than a speeding jet engine.  I mean, they have enough power to slice through ZIRCONIA as if it were butter.  Not bad, not bad at all.

Kathy Allen rocks.  And she's from Michigan (go Wolverines!) She came prepared for the podcast with one of the classiest beers out there— Michelob Amberbock.  While it's no vodka soda, it seemed to have done the trick for a highly entertaining podcast.  We'll forgive her this time!

Kathy is an employee of Kerr Dental (http://www.kerrdental.com), which is understand the strong ideology that dentistry is a science. And an art. They also believe that being a successful dentist is something much more. Being a dentist means mastering an ever-advancing science. Embracing new tools of technology. And steering a growing business in a rapidly changing healthcare market.

We discussed everything from suggested preps for eMax and CADCAM, best protocols for adjustment and polishing porcelin, eMax and Zirconia what dentists can use to remove a Zirconia, eMax and PFM, composite adjustment and polish techniques and finally DO NOT treat your working tool that make you money as a commodity.  Learn invest and organize them— it's key to your success as a dental practitioner.

It was an absolute pleasure to have Kathy on our show.  She was tons of fun.

Until next time— cheers!

After a long day of installing a brand new 3-D printer from 365 Printing in our office, Bryce Servine and Holly Tolbert joined Justin and Gabe in Studio 1-A for the 20th episode of our podcast.  It sounds like a great time was had!  Since this is our second 3-D Printing podcast (with one more on deck), you have to admit that 3-D printing must be the next big thing in the world of dentistry.

You can check out more information about 365 Printing by visiting their companies' website at http://www.365printing.com/

Also, fun fact: we learned something new about Gabe in this podcast... Gabe likes the goo.  Yep, you read that correctly.  Gabe likes goo.

We're carrying on our streak of orthodontists on the show— this time we had the chance to talk to Dr. Sean K. Carlson, who is a Board Certified Orthodontist who lectures worldwide on CBCT.  Dr. Carlson gave us plenty of insight into how the airway and breathing can be compromised and how orthodontics is the best course of action when putting together a treatment plan.

Dr. Carlson is the owner and operator of his practice, Carlson Orthodontics, and he lectures around the country with Carlson Quintero Seminars.

Dr. Carlson is a Board Certified Orthodontist who received his dental degree from Harvard University in 1994. There he was awarded the American Association of Orthodontists Award upon graduation for demonstrating exceptional interest in the development of the oro-facial complex. He received both his Orthodontic Specialty training and his Master of Science degree in Oral Biology from the University of California at San Francisco in 1998.

Dr. Carlson is an Associate Professor of Orthodontics at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry where he teaches one day a week. He has received several academic research awards including two American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Awards and has published numerous articles and abstracts in the orthodontic literature. He lectures nationally on a variety of clinical and theoretical subjects. His current lecture schedule focuses on three-dimensional imaging in orthodontics and the treatment of dental impactions.

Since 1998, Dr. Carlson has served as a Senior Investigator in the Craniofacial Research and Instrumentation Laboratory at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. His primary focus is on using computer technology to improve the way we study, teach and practice orthodontics. As a result of his research, he has been at the forefront of 3-D imaging technology since it was first introduced to the orthodontic profession. He installed Marin County’s first i-CAT 3-D CBCT x-ray machine in 2008.

We had the pleasure of having Dr. Jeffrey Wiswall, DDS, MS in-studio with us for this episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms.  Fun fact: Dr. Jeffrey Wiswall is currently the ONLY board certified Endodontist in the state of South Dakota.

Endodontists are a rare (and strange) breed of dental specialists... such a rare breed that many dental professionals wonder why these Endodontists go into their specialty to begin with.  That was proven when Gabe asked Dr. Jeff Wiswall if he had lost a bet when he decided to go into Endodontics.

We discussed what sort of an edge board certification can give an endodontist when marketing to the public.  Does the public care about board certification?  Find out Dr. Wiswall's opinion in this episode.

You can check out more of Dr. Wiswall's work by visiting his website at http://www.drwiswall.com

Great discussion with Dr. Wiswall.  Thank you for being on the show!
