For Dr. Kate Gross, her father’s influence and mentorship guided her career choice. “Growing up in a ‘dental family’ I watched the relationships that my dad built with his patients and his patients’ families. I liked how he made a difference in their lives and their confidence levels.” Dr. Kate loves the challenge of general dentistry and the gratification of beautifying patients’ smiles. “There’s never a dull day in the dental office. Each patient and each tooth is different, and I love how dentistry pushes me to use my brain in unique ways to problem solve each day.”

One of the best parts of being a dentist is winning over kids and scared patients. She takes the task of being an advocate and trusted healthcare provider very seriously. “Going to the dentist should be an enjoyable, if not FUN, experience. I take it very seriously to make all of our patients’ first (and subsequent) appointments go smoothly, and the development of our relationship is a high priority to me. Being a trusted advocate for a patient through each part of the experience is one of the most rewarding parts of my days.”

Dr. Kate was motivated to go down the health care path, and at first thought that the best fit for her would be medical schoolan affinity for the medical field was always a driving force. She seriously considered being a medical doctor, but decided she’d rather be a dentist like her own father. “My priorities shifted – I didn’t want to be in school for eight additional years after college, and I didn’t want the pressure of life or death decisions.

“When I was young, I viewed dental care as going to see my dad! However, I hear each day from my patients that the dental office is a very intimidating place for many. I want to change all of that. It fuels my passion to get someone’s mouth healthy, all the while making them comfortable and changing their perception of dentistry.” I saw all the benefits that my dad had from being a dentist, I liked his lifestyle, and the way he could touch his patients’ lives and be a very hands-on parent during my own childhood. Today dentistry allows me to have a nice balance between professional and personal life, while satisfying my ambition to be in a health care related field.”

Dr. Gross earned her Bachelor of the Arts in Human Biology from the University of Kansas in 1998, and her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002. She has continued to learn more about dentistry and patient care through continuing education in orthodontics and oral sedation. In fact, Dr. Kate has logged over 300 hours in orthodontic continuing education alone, gaining her Achievement status in the credentialing process through the American Orthodontic Society.

The dental group she has built with her husband, Dr. Guy Gross, is a source of pride and achievement. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather work than side-by-side with my husband, my father (2002-2013 when he retired), and my brother (2013 to present). “It is truly a family practice - one that was built on my family working together - and one that takes care of families at every stage of life experience. I like the variety, the fast pace, and the patients that I see grow and change throughout the years. The best part of my job is the deeply caring, highly skilled, and truly awesome professionals that I work side-by-side with. Aside from my family, these are the people that I spend the most time with, and I greatly value them and enjoy their company!”

When she’s not helping creating lasting beautiful smiles, Dr. Kate serves as a board member of DVACK, an organization that helps women and children get back on their feet after the devastation of violence and abuse in their home lives, and supports AMBUCs. She enjoys being outdoors; whether it is running, gardening, swimming, skiing, watching her kids’ play sports, or chilling on the patio—the great outdoors is her happy place. She loves spending time with her husband and their 3 children, and is blessed to have her parents, in-laws, and many extended family members living here in Salina to cultivate strong family ties. Given a year off to do anything, Dr. Gross says she would take the kids out of school and take an epic around-the-world vacation, living in and experiencing new cultures, foods, people, and places.

Randy Houska, from our previous episode #35, finally joined us in the Black Hills for some post-Sturgis shenanigans and troublemaking.  Turns out, an epic podcast was in-store.  I'd give you more show notes here, but unfortunately, things kind of went off the rails on this one!

Suddenly... an unexpected guest arrives!  Roger Plooster is Justin Moody's mentor, friend and educator from his days learning the ropes of the dental world in Western Nebraska.

Also, please note that we had about 8 shots of Fireball all lined up for us to take in the studio... Roger Plooster opens the door,  grabs one, shoots it, grabs another shoots it, and then looks around and asks if we have anything stronger.  Between Roger and Pasty, a full bottle of Jameson met its demise.

There's nothing quite like capping off a long day of dropping screws with a couple of shots of cold Fireball.  Luis Filipe Mariusso, DMD (one of the many Kentucky boys involved in the Life and Dentistry Podcast), recently joined Dr. Justin Moody at the BrighterWay Dental Center in Phoenix, AZ for three days of live surgeries through Implant Pathway.

The key to any dental practice is how to constantly bring in new patients. We all know this. But how do you attract those patients who cannot afford expensive dental treatment in one lump sum? Those patients can typically afford a car payment-sized monthly bill— so why not make that part of your practice?

We had Dave Roehr and Brad Bailor of Proceed Finance (http://www.proceedfinance.com) to discuss their company and how well payment plans work when it comes to attracting new patients with low financial risk to the doctors who consult with them.

As company founder and president of The Gelfand Group (http://www.gelfandgroup.com), Norman Gelfand began his commercial real estate career in 1988. He was a top-producing commercial broker for one of Austin’s large commercial real estate firms for 5 years, in which he earned 16 company awards for top performance in selling, listing, & leasing property.

In 1993, he established his own brokerage firm, Magnum Real Estate, and continued to sharpen his skills as an expert in negotiating commercial real estate contracts and navigating complex commercial real estate issues to successful completion. Magnum Real Estate served the commercial real estate needs of a wide range of business professionals: general office, retail, industrial, hi-tech, & general healthcare in leasing, purchasing and sales transactions.

In 2001, Magnum Real Estate transitioned into Gelfand Group Commercial Real Estate and the firm began exclusively representing tenants and buyers, specializing in dental & medical real estate in the central Texas area.  Gelfand Group continues to add satisfied customers to its client base. The firm’s experience speaks for itself: Locating the right space for a practice, thorough lease/purchase contract analysis, and expert contract negotiation continue to be the three most important components to Gelfand Group’s success as we represent dental practitioners in their real estate needs.  To date, Gelfand Group has negotiated 400 leases and sales, with a volume of $200,000,000.

Prior to his real estate career, Norman spent 22 years as founder, president, & CEO of an engineering/contracting company, which provided design and installation services of impervious surfaces used to protect concrete & steel against industrial environments to Fortune 500 companies.  At peak, his company employed 60 construction craftsmen and supervisors through the home office in Houston, with branch operations in Dallas, Texas and Syracuse, New York.  Contracts ranged from $20,000 to $600,000.  The company’s clients included IBM, Texas Instruments, AMD, Lockheed, Exxon, Arco, Goodyear, Union Carbide, Borden Foods, and Nestle.

It was during the start of this business in 1967 that Norman truly began developing one of his most salient business talents: that of contract review and negotiation. He continues to exhibit that extraordinary talent as he works with clients, landlords, professional service providers, and other commercial brokers not only by his extensive knowledge of commercial real estate contracts, but by his ability to negotiate fairly, honestly, and in a businesslike manner, with three goals in mind: Real estate cost reduction (appropriate for both leasing/purchase clients), significant limitation of perilous contractual obligations and liabilities, and safeguarding the client’s capital investment.

Norman has been a contributing author to the Austin Business Journal since 2001.  His articles reflect his extensive knowledge of commercial real estate contracts and contain expert advice on many commercial real estate issues, particularly those having to do with dental & medical office leases and purchases. Because Gelfand Group’s proven track record centers around the unique real estate needs of dental & medical practitioners, the majority of his articles suggest that they are well-attuned to the changing trends of healthcare real estate with regard to pricing, availability, demographics, future planned developments, etc.

Norman has participated in numerous industry organizations, including the Austin Board of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, National Board of Realtors, Commercial Leasing Brokers’ Association, and Central Texas Commercial Brokers’ Association. He is a previous board member of the Central Texas Chapter of CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Manager).  He is a cofounder of the Austin Commercial Brokers’ Association. He is a past president of the Technical Advisory Group.

His civic involvement includes serving as a previous board member of the American Red Cross and membership in Rotary International. Norman is a member of Shriners International, and is an active member and past president of a local chapter of Toastmasters International.

"I was born and raised on Long Island, NY. In between doing what average suburban kids do, I spent much of my childhood at the heels of my father who retired from the New York City Police Department after 33 years.

My interest in money and business led me to major in Economics at Cortland College. At 21, following in my father’s footsteps, I began my 17 year career with the New York City Police Department.

I retired as a Lieutenant in September 2000. I had an opportunity to pursue my interest in the financial industry and joined an international CPA firm. For many, my career change seems drastic and curious, “I can’t believe you used to be a cop!” and “How did you go from police officer to accountant?” have become almost synonymous among clients and colleagues in realizing my former profession. While I’m no longer chasing “perps” down the streets of New York City, I still maintain the same type of rush and dedication to saving clients thousands of dollars in tax and seeing the look of delight on their faces.

The way I run my practice is rooted in tax planning. Our philosophy is to find ways to legally reduce tax liabilities and keep more of what our clients earn in their own pockets. Each new client, corporate and personal, is given a tax analysis in which we review prior tax returns as well as current financials in order to identify missed opportunities and prior mistakes which resulted in unnecessary tax expenditures. From there, we implement a personalized plan to save the client thousands.

As a Certified Tax Coach™, I belong to a select group of practitioners throughout the country who undergo extensive training and continued education on various tax planning techniques and strategies in order to become, as well as remain, certified. With this organization I have co-authored an Amazon best seller, Secrets of a Tax Free Life.

In addition to tax planning, my practice offers traditional tax services as well as off site CFO services. With my dedicated and passionate team we are able to provide daily guidance and advice to business clients. Our efficiency is embedded in our team concept. Our clients include, but are not limited to, Medical Professionals, Clothing Sourcing Businesses and Commercial Electrical Companies."

Brandon Evert just finished up a two week stint as an intern— basically shadowing Justin as he worked in his office here in Rapid City at The Dental Implant Center and in Nebraska at Horizon West Dental.  Lots of dropping screws, some interesting cases and a heated situation with a patient.  Brandon tells us a bit about his experience and what the futures holds for him.

We wish you the best of luck, Brandon!  And we will stay in touch as you continue on your path through dental school (which you WILL be accepted in, by the way!)

Cheers!
