Dental practice owners, type your practice's name into Google and see what happens.  Where do you show up?  Are you in the first couple of entries on the first page of results?  If you are, good job!  If you are not, then you need to talk to Mike Pedersen of TheDentalBoost.com.  And if you don't have a website at all— then you definitely need to get on the phone with Mike Pedersen ASAP.

We had a chance to sit down with Mike and talk about experiences with Search Engine Optimization, Google AdWords, the importance of analyzing your search results and then shared a few stories of SEO nightmares at the expense of Lance Timmerman.

Mike Pedersen, the founder and owner of The Dental Boost has had his content (articles) published on authority dental sites like AACD.com (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists), DentistryIQ, DrBicuspid.com, Patterson Dental (Off The Cusp), Dental Town, DentalCPAs; as well as The Dental Entrepreneur magazine; and has formed partnerships with some of the biggest names in dental practice consulting. Mike is available for presentations on Dental Website Marketing and Search Engine Optimization at local association meetings, study clubs, or major dental meetings.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR LISTENERS: Mike is offering to give our listeners a consultation of any length and if you find significant value in that consultation, then he'll charge you $1.  One dollar for an open discussion about your business?  That's a steal.  Visit https://thedentalboost.com/worms/ to fill out a form that will give Mike a better idea of where your business is currently at and where you need to go.

As company founder and president of The Gelfand Group (http://www.gelfandgroup.com), Norman Gelfand began his commercial real estate career in 1988. He was a top-producing commercial broker for one of Austin’s large commercial real estate firms for 5 years, in which he earned 16 company awards for top performance in selling, listing, & leasing property.

In 1993, he established his own brokerage firm, Magnum Real Estate, and continued to sharpen his skills as an expert in negotiating commercial real estate contracts and navigating complex commercial real estate issues to successful completion. Magnum Real Estate served the commercial real estate needs of a wide range of business professionals: general office, retail, industrial, hi-tech, & general healthcare in leasing, purchasing and sales transactions.

In 2001, Magnum Real Estate transitioned into Gelfand Group Commercial Real Estate and the firm began exclusively representing tenants and buyers, specializing in dental & medical real estate in the central Texas area.  Gelfand Group continues to add satisfied customers to its client base. The firm’s experience speaks for itself: Locating the right space for a practice, thorough lease/purchase contract analysis, and expert contract negotiation continue to be the three most important components to Gelfand Group’s success as we represent dental practitioners in their real estate needs.  To date, Gelfand Group has negotiated 400 leases and sales, with a volume of $200,000,000.

Prior to his real estate career, Norman spent 22 years as founder, president, & CEO of an engineering/contracting company, which provided design and installation services of impervious surfaces used to protect concrete & steel against industrial environments to Fortune 500 companies.  At peak, his company employed 60 construction craftsmen and supervisors through the home office in Houston, with branch operations in Dallas, Texas and Syracuse, New York.  Contracts ranged from $20,000 to $600,000.  The company’s clients included IBM, Texas Instruments, AMD, Lockheed, Exxon, Arco, Goodyear, Union Carbide, Borden Foods, and Nestle.

It was during the start of this business in 1967 that Norman truly began developing one of his most salient business talents: that of contract review and negotiation. He continues to exhibit that extraordinary talent as he works with clients, landlords, professional service providers, and other commercial brokers not only by his extensive knowledge of commercial real estate contracts, but by his ability to negotiate fairly, honestly, and in a businesslike manner, with three goals in mind: Real estate cost reduction (appropriate for both leasing/purchase clients), significant limitation of perilous contractual obligations and liabilities, and safeguarding the client’s capital investment.

Norman has been a contributing author to the Austin Business Journal since 2001.  His articles reflect his extensive knowledge of commercial real estate contracts and contain expert advice on many commercial real estate issues, particularly those having to do with dental & medical office leases and purchases. Because Gelfand Group’s proven track record centers around the unique real estate needs of dental & medical practitioners, the majority of his articles suggest that they are well-attuned to the changing trends of healthcare real estate with regard to pricing, availability, demographics, future planned developments, etc.

Norman has participated in numerous industry organizations, including the Austin Board of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, National Board of Realtors, Commercial Leasing Brokers’ Association, and Central Texas Commercial Brokers’ Association. He is a previous board member of the Central Texas Chapter of CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Manager).  He is a cofounder of the Austin Commercial Brokers’ Association. He is a past president of the Technical Advisory Group.

His civic involvement includes serving as a previous board member of the American Red Cross and membership in Rotary International. Norman is a member of Shriners International, and is an active member and past president of a local chapter of Toastmasters International.

Craig Cody is a CPA and a Certified Tax Coach who has been helping professionals of all backgrounds analyze their finances and tax situations.  Craig stresses the importance of financial planning in the long-term, rather than waiting until November of each year to start concentrating on your taxes.  Craig is the co-author of the Amazon bestseller, “Secrets of a Tax Free Life.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR LISTENERS: You can get your copy of Craig’s latest book “10 Most Expensive Tax Mistakes That Cost Business Owners Thousands” in the mail by completing this form. http://www.craigcodyandcompany.com/diw/

Craig S. Cody, CPA

"I was born and raised on Long Island, NY. In between doing what average suburban kids do, I spent much of my childhood at the heels of my father who retired from the New York City Police Department after 33 years.

My interest in money and business led me to major in Economics at Cortland College. At 21, following in my father’s footsteps, I began my 17 year career with the New York City Police Department.

I retired as a Lieutenant in September 2000. I had an opportunity to pursue my interest in the financial industry and joined an international CPA firm. For many, my career change seems drastic and curious, “I can’t believe you used to be a cop!” and “How did you go from police officer to accountant?” have become almost synonymous among clients and colleagues in realizing my former profession. While I’m no longer chasing “perps” down the streets of New York City, I still maintain the same type of rush and dedication to saving clients thousands of dollars in tax and seeing the look of delight on their faces.

The way I run my practice is rooted in tax planning. Our philosophy is to find ways to legally reduce tax liabilities and keep more of what our clients earn in their own pockets. Each new client, corporate and personal, is given a tax analysis in which we review prior tax returns as well as current financials in order to identify missed opportunities and prior mistakes which resulted in unnecessary tax expenditures. From there, we implement a personalized plan to save the client thousands.

As a Certified Tax Coach™, I belong to a select group of practitioners throughout the country who undergo extensive training and continued education on various tax planning techniques and strategies in order to become, as well as remain, certified. With this organization I have co-authored an Amazon best seller, Secrets of a Tax Free Life.

In addition to tax planning, my practice offers traditional tax services as well as off site CFO services. With my dedicated and passionate team we are able to provide daily guidance and advice to business clients. Our efficiency is embedded in our team concept. Our clients include, but are not limited to, Medical Professionals, Clothing Sourcing Businesses and Commercial Electrical Companies."

Bruised, broken and hungover... Justin and Gabe recount their adventures in Quito, Ecuador while Jeff laughs at their misfortunes.  All in all, it was a fantastic trip and they had a lot of fun.  There were a couple of slight mishaps on the road, but they made it back in one piece and in good spirits!

What happens when Justin and Gabe go off on a motorcycle adventure in Quito, Ecuador?  Jeff records a brief podcast by himself, updating our listeners on Justin and Gabe's international travels.  We'll see if they ever come back from South America...

Brandon Evert just finished up a two week stint as an intern— basically shadowing Justin as he worked in his office here in Rapid City at The Dental Implant Center and in Nebraska at Horizon West Dental.  Lots of dropping screws, some interesting cases and a heated situation with a patient.  Brandon tells us a bit about his experience and what the futures holds for him.

We wish you the best of luck, Brandon!  And we will stay in touch as you continue on your path through dental school (which you WILL be accepted in, by the way!)

Cheers!

Strap yourselves in for one hell of an entertaining podcast as we have Dr. Lance Timmerman returning to the show.  He was last seen on Episode 26 way back in the day!  On this episode, Lance talks about how a company that provides SEO to small businesses screwed him over, holding his website content hostage.  Justin and Jeff then go straight to Google to judge Lance's website and SEO... and that is when we stumbled upon some of the hilariously awful patient reviews he has under his belt.

Gabe is notably missing from this episode because he was too busy taking pictures of dick-shaped clouds in Nebraska.

Check out Lance's website and be sure to read some of the hilarious reviews he has received (along with plenty of good ones!) by visiting https://www.drtimmerman.com/

PS. Originally, since Justin and Jeff forgot to ask Lance for a song to close his episode out with, we were going to end with "Oops I Did It Again" but Lance ended up requesting Tom Jones' "Mama Told Me Not to Come" — which we're OK with!

Thanks for the giggles, Lance!

Believe it or not, folks... Dentists, Implants and Worms have made it to Episode 100!  In celebration of our huge milestone episode, we decided to try out something different by featuring some of our closest friends and supporters on the show.  In short, it didn't go well due to technical difficulties— mainly because the three of us are Skype newbies. (Yeah, we'll work on that.)

Regardless of the "shit show" when it came to Skype, we managed to make the best of it by briefly connecting with our biggest fans: Mike Freimuth, DDS; The Dental Hacks Podcast (Alan Mead, DDS and Jason Lipscomb, DDS); Erin Elliott, DDS; Lisa Moler; The Life and Dentistry Podcast; Danny Domingue, DDS.

Perhaps, even more notably, The Worm himself— John Landers, DDS— decided to grace us with his presence.

I promise you there IS some dental content discussed around the 1 hour 20 minute mark (thank you Dr. Domingue).  All in all though, it was a greatly entertaining podcast and I truly mean it when I say that I've never had so much fun taking around 3 hours of technical difficulties and non-sequiters and cutting it down to a super-sized (1 hour and 40 minutes) episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms.

We can't thank ALL 100 of our previous guests enough.  Trust us, if we were able to, we would have Skyped you all in, but as you can tell from listening to this episode, we could barely handle 8 guests, let alone 100.

Here's to another 100 episodes of the podcast that navigates you through the world of dentistry, one vodka-soda at a time!  Thank you for listening and supporting us, and cheers!
