Jun 8, 2016

This is the podcast we've all been waiting for!  We've been hyping this guest up for a few weeks now and finally, Erin Elliot, DDS has arrived.  We had such a blast with her and her partner-in-crime Bri Bove that we're going to go ahead and release two parts to this episode.  Yep, that's right... another two-part podcast!

Dr. Elliott was out here in Rapid City, SD because she was teaching a course on sleep and how it relates to dentists.  She conducted several sleep studies while she was out here and we just had to take advantage and have her on the show!

Part Two will be a follow up after the course had completed.  You know, for some reflection, commentary and, of course, post-course drinks.

Thank you so much for being a loyal fan of our podcast and for being an amazing guest, Erin!  Let's do it again!

Feel free to e-mail Erin with any questions or inquiries at erinelliottdds@gmail.com

Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani joined the worms in podcast studio 1-A for the latest podcast.  After meeting her and chatting with her via Skype, we can easily say Cynthia is our favorite Italian dentist.  She is a very successful dentist in the Bay Area— and we can totally see why!  Not only is she very knowledgeable, focused, driven— all of those make for a great dentist, of course.  But what really resonated with us is her quote, "Smile often and see what happens."  That is a great philosophy for a dentist to embrace.  For everyone to embrace, really.

It was a pleasure having Dr. Brattesani as our guest for this podcast.  We had so much fun getting to know her story!  Thank you, Cynthia!  Until next time—

From Cynthia's website, which can be found at http://www.drcynthiab.com/

Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani, DDS, is fast becoming one of the best-known figures in the dental industry. She has written dozens of articles for professional journals and websites including Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, SideKick, Women's Dental Journal, and she is a frequent lecturer at conferences and dental schools on a variety of topics..

Dr. Brattesani received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1989, and joined the practice of her brother, Steven J. Brattesani in San Francisco and Dr. William van Dyk in the East Bay as an associate the same year.

After working as an associate for more than a decade, Dr. Brattesani opened her own practice in 2002, and it has become one of the fastest-growing dental practices in the Bay area since then.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Dental Association's "Golden Apple" Award for Outstanding New Dentist Leader in 1996, and the U.S. Medal of Merit for outstanding public service for the City of San Francisco Earthquake. In 2015 she was honored with the UCSF 150th Anniversary Alumni Award.

She has served in many positions and remains an active member of The American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the San Francisco Dental Society (SFDS) of which she served as president. Very early in her career, she became a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Brattesani’s passion is innovation serving on many advisory dental boards. Dedicated to the advancement of dentistry, she is a proud member of the Spear Education Faculty Club requiring hundreds of hour of continuing education.

In 2013 she was appointed to the Management Committee of CDA Cares -- managing a dental clinic providing millions of dollars of free dentistry to thousands of the undeserved population. Dr Brattesani was recently quoted in a local dental newsletter stating: “Volunteering for me is a matter of the heart. It offers gifts often disguising themselves in the actual work. It offers me a lesson of humility and the value of courage to make me stand in something that I truly believe in. Volunteering together for the common good allows me to recognize what is truly extraordinary in the world. And once you open your heart----there is no turning back."

In 2015, she was honored with the UCSF 150th Alumni Award, an honor of great distinction.

Some major things happened on tonight's podcast.  Our guest was none other than Jim Perry, the COO and VP of Affordable Dentures and Implants— plus a colleague of Justin's.  He shared plenty of his insight and business acumen— how it relates to dentistry and how dental schools just do not prepare their future doctors properly.  A bit of a bombshell was dropped when his departure from ADI was brought up.  Looks like he's going to dental school!

From Affordable Dentures and Implants:

Since joining Affordable Care in 2001 as director of professional development, James Perry was promoted to vice president of dental placement and, subsequently, to vice president of practice operations before being named chief operating officer. Mr. Perry was responsible for conceptualizing and forming the COO Study Club among a group of his colleagues in the Association of Dental Support Organizations. Prior to Affordable Care, he worked in the executive search industry for a subsidiary of publicly traded company. Mr. Perry holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and an M.B.A from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He is married with three daughters.

The other big reveal?  After 28 episodes, Gabe Olson now officially has a cartoon of himself for our podcast website and promotional material.  Welcome to the family, Gabe.

Now, if only we could get "The Worm" to appear on OUR podcast sometime...

Until next time,

Cheers!

JoAn Majors is a long-time colleague and dear friend of Justin's— and we had the excellent opportunity to have her come visit Podcast Studio 1-A for our latest episode.  JoAn, as you will soon find out, has a firey sense of passion, drive and razor sharp wit.  It was a lot of fun to have her on the show and to have her visit our office here in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Here's a biography about JoAn directly from her website at joanmajors.com:

JoAn Majors has figured out that having great information in a seminar today just isn’t enough. With on line availability consultants, coaches and business folks converging on the dental market, it takes much much more! It is about an experience. Entertainment and education backed by real research are bedrock to all her one day seminars as well as any DBC 2 day Signature Event. All programs start with an in-depth conversation and research on those attending as well as those co-sponsoring. One day events include a pre-lecture dinner meeting with the major players. This allows JoAn to personalize each and every lecture and highlight the unique information based on real research. Her quest to meet and exceed expectations is congruent with her talent to ask each and every audience what they want to walk away with. Much like they ask patient’s in their Texas practice.

Also, if you needed any further proof at how effective of a trainer JoAn Majors is— here's a few testimonies from some of her colleagues that attended her speaking engagements:

"We immediately put JoAns principles to work in our practice and noticed and overwhelming change in case acceptance. Each member of our team have commented on "loving their jobs again"- feeling as thought they have a renewed sense of purpose in our office and tin the field of dentistry. We are no longer treating mouths but developing relationships with our patients, offering them choices and ultimately offering them hope. It is refreshing to come to work everyday! Thank you, JoAn you have inspired us all and sparked a flame in each of us. We look forward to the time we meet again. We would travel twice the distance to learn from you and we encourage every dentist and team to do so..." - Andrea Legault: Dental Spouse & Manager, British Columbia

"JoAn has an exceptional spirit that is infectious and lifts those around her. As importantly, she possesses a wealth of dental practice know-how and experience that is provided to clients with ease and grace. Her systems and methods are useful, unique, accessible and proven through years of implementation and refinement. Over my 20 years in and out of dental practices, I have not met anyone that has more knowledge about what truly makes a successful dental practice. Unlike most, she quickly puts at ease both the dentist and their staff. In addition to access to her critical industry knowledge, she is a wonderful person to be around and makes anyone who meets her simile. She is a wonderful mother, dental spouse and friend. I highly recommend JoAn and hope those reading this are lucky enough to enjoy her services."

- James Dunn: VP – Corporate Development & Pentegra Dental Group, Inc.

You have to check out more about her services and products that can easily change the way JoAn can single-handedly change the way your team operates and grow your business.  She's a truly inspiring force in the world of dentistry!

Thank you so much for spending a few days with us in Rapid City— and thanks for the great podcast, JoAn!  Until next time— cheers!

It's time to go TOTALLY ORAL with The Worms... Oh, and Dr. Lance Timmerman too.

Lance Timmerman was Podcast Studio 1-A's latest guest and, man, was this episode irreverent as hell.  We think some dental topics may have been discussed...??

Jeff was notably missing from this episode due to hurt feelings after being called a Pasty Gangsta on the previous podcast.  Tune in next time to see if he was fired or not.

Definitely give Totally Oral (totallyoral.libsyn.com) a listen on iTunes.  This is the podcast where "Dr. Lance Timmerman discusses the OTHER side of dentistry. Warts and all. Current materials, current methods, old people."  It's pretty good, but it's no Dentists, Implants and Worms.

Oh, and here's a cheap plug for Dr. Timmerman's professional website, www.DrTimmerman.com

Thanks for the laughs, Timmerman!  We'll work on getting you back here in due time.  Cheers!

It's the 25th episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms!  How time has flown by... Remember in our first few episodes we included a shout-out to a fellow dentist who sent us three lovely mugs with our logo and characters on it?  Well, that was Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver from Great Lakes Dentistry in Royal Oak, Michigan and he happens to be our guest for this milestone episode of the show.

Not only is Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver (Dr. SVDV?) known for his excellent work in the world of dentistry (just check out his Google reviews for proof of that!) but he also runs his own, very unique podcast portal specifically for dental podcasts.  It's called Practice in a Pod and it is just a small example of how passionate Dr. SVDV is about dentistry.

We discuss a wide variety of things... the normal BS, some dental stuff, podcast shop-talk, etc.  You'll just have to listen.  We also pay respect to the late Prince with one of Jeff's song choices.  Feel free to skip that.  Too many drinks that evening.

Check out Practice in a Pod at http://practiceinapod.com/ and also check out Shawn's dental practice at https://gldentistry.com/

Thank you so much for being on the show, Shawn!  We'll be sure to have you back in the next 25 episodes.  Cheers!

Podcast Studio 1-A was recently graced with the presence of local pharmacology expert and Medicine Shoppe owner, Dr. Curt Rising— who also happens to be a lifelong friend of Justin's.  Curt gives us some insight into the best practices for prescribing medication in relation to dental work, implant placement and also talks about the recovery process behind oral surgery.  Justin and Curt also discuss the pros and cons, and what their preferences are for certain steroids used in the recovery period after oral surgery.

Definitely check out the Medicine Shoppe in Rapid City, SD if you are looking for a new pharmacy for your personal prescriptions or if you are a local dentist looking for an experienced pharmacist that knows pain management when it comes to dentistry.

Thanks, Dr. Rising, for the awesome time in the studio.  Great information!

"Faster than a speeding jet plane! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!"

Okay, well I don't know about the two parts of that catchphrase, but there is no doubt that burs move faster than a speeding jet engine.  I mean, they have enough power to slice through ZIRCONIA as if it were butter.  Not bad, not bad at all.

Kathy Allen rocks.  And she's from Michigan (go Wolverines!) She came prepared for the podcast with one of the classiest beers out there— Michelob Amberbock.  While it's no vodka soda, it seemed to have done the trick for a highly entertaining podcast.  We'll forgive her this time!

Kathy is an employee of Kerr Dental (http://www.kerrdental.com), which is understand the strong ideology that dentistry is a science. And an art. They also believe that being a successful dentist is something much more. Being a dentist means mastering an ever-advancing science. Embracing new tools of technology. And steering a growing business in a rapidly changing healthcare market.

We discussed everything from suggested preps for eMax and CADCAM, best protocols for adjustment and polishing porcelin, eMax and Zirconia what dentists can use to remove a Zirconia, eMax and PFM, composite adjustment and polish techniques and finally DO NOT treat your working tool that make you money as a commodity.  Learn invest and organize them— it's key to your success as a dental practitioner.

It was an absolute pleasure to have Kathy on our show.  She was tons of fun.

Until next time— cheers!

We had the pleasure of having Dr. Jeffrey Wiswall, DDS, MS in-studio with us for this episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms.  Fun fact: Dr. Jeffrey Wiswall is currently the ONLY board certified Endodontist in the state of South Dakota.

Endodontists are a rare (and strange) breed of dental specialists... such a rare breed that many dental professionals wonder why these Endodontists go into their specialty to begin with.  That was proven when Gabe asked Dr. Jeff Wiswall if he had lost a bet when he decided to go into Endodontics.

We discussed what sort of an edge board certification can give an endodontist when marketing to the public.  Does the public care about board certification?  Find out Dr. Wiswall's opinion in this episode.

You can check out more of Dr. Wiswall's work by visiting his website at http://www.drwiswall.com

Great discussion with Dr. Wiswall.  Thank you for being on the show!

Here's the conclusion— the second part of our interview with Dr. Edward Zuckerberg, DDS. We talk about so many things— too many to list, really. You'll just have to listen. We were amazed by the innovative mind, the down-to-earth personality and, of course, the exquisite taste in wine that Ed expressed to us. Such an honor!

We got the chance to interview Dr. Edward Zuckerberg, DDS— who is notably the father of Mark Zuckerberg (yes, that Mark Zuckerberg). Ed is a fantastic dentist who is just as forward thinking as his son, Mark. In this two-part episode, we were also graced with the presence of Dr. John Landers— so this was our first episode with a full-house in-studio! Not bad for thirteen episodes in.

Dr. Zuckerberg is a 1978 graduate of New York University College of Dentistry. He completed a general practice residency at the Brooklyn V.A. Hospital in 1979 and received advanced training in Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Endodontics (Root Canal) and Prosthetics (Crown, Bridges and Dentures). In 1984, Dr. Zuckerberg received a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (F.A.G.D.) recognizing his superior achievements in post-graduate continuing education.

To this day, Dr. Zuckerberg regularly participates in courses to improve his craft utilizing modern techniques and materials. He has consulted with insurance companies and appeared as an expert witness in court. Dr. Zuckerberg has published articles in Dental Journals on his observations and on his development of new techniques and is featured in the September 2010 issue of Dentaltown Magazine where he writes on the use of Social Media (Facebook) for Dentists. His ability to render comprehensive care, while being especially sensitive to the needs of phobic patients, sets him apart from his colleagues. Dr. Zuckerberg’s outside interests include scuba diving, photography and contract bridge.

We had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. Douglas Chenin, DDS from San Francisco, California on the latest episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms.  Dr. Moody has an interesting connection to Dr. Chenin— they released a DVD series together!  We discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from Cone Beam Readers, orthodontics and sleep medicine.  Also, there may have been a spilled drink in there somewhere.

Dr. Chenin graduated from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and practiced for several years in the San Francisco Bay Area. He then started consulting with Anatomage, the creators of the Invivo5 3D imaging software and the Anatomage Surgical Guide System. He soon became Director of Clinical Affairs for the company, working with doctors all over the world to teach them about Anatomage's 3D imaging technology. He was also instrumental in the development and initial beta testing for the Anatomage Guide system. After working with Anatomage for five years, he launched his own company called Clinically Correct Inc, which focuses on CBCT education. This was an interesting one.  We had the honor of having Dr. Brian Prouty join us in-studio... all the way from small-town Watertown, South Dakota!  We discussed everything from sedation dentistry to people's irrational fears of dentists (a fairly common hurdle for the dental professional to jump over).

Dr. Prouty DDS DICOI PC was born and raised in South Dakota. He is a biology/chemistry graduate from SDSU. Completed dental studies at Marquette University School of Dentistry in 2004. Implant training at the Medical College of Georgia School AAID Implant program in 2006. Completed intravenous sedation training at the Medical College of Georgia. Graduate of both the surgical, as well as the prosthetic programs of Misch International Institute.

Dr. Prouty is a fellow, a master, and a diplomat of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is a charter member as well as an Instructor of the Rocky Mountain Dental Institute Implant Training Center. Dr. Prouty's goal has always been to be well trained in all facets of dentistry so he can deliver great personalized and comfortable care to his patients.

Be sure to take a look at Dr. Prouty's practice's website: http://familycosmeticandimplantdentistry.com/

Thank you, Dr. Prouty, for being our third in-studio guest!

In another milestone episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms (our tenth episode!), we had the chance to interview California's biggest Chicago Cubs fan— John Tyszka.  We're joined by John all the way from Oceanside, California where he owns Precision One Medical.

Precision One Medical was established in late 2009 and is headquartered in Oceanside California in a 30,000 square foot facility.   Each member of the ownership team has been involved in the dental and medical manufacturing sectors for over twenty years. The experience levels in these areas don’t end at ownership. The Manufacturing and Quality teams have equally substantial experience in medical manufacturing methods and systems.

You can learn more about Precision One Medical by visiting their website at http://www.precisiononemedical.com/.  Also be sure to check out this CNC West article that features an insightful interview with John as he discusses his personal "Formula For Success." http://www.cnc-west.com/CEMM__Formula_for_Succes.html

Thank you again for being on the show, John!  And listeners: we'll see you again this Friday for another episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms!

It's the week of milestones here on Dentists, Implants and Worms, as we reached TWO more in Episode #9.  We had the pleasure of having our first in-studio guest on the show AND our first female guest— marketing and social media guru, Maureen Gustafson.

Maureen has an extensive background in marketing, having worked with a variety of marketing firms and consultants.  While she currently owns the newly opened My Place Hotels in Rapid City, Maureen has continued to keep up with the ever-changing world of marketing and social media, and has offered her vast knowledge and experience to other businesses around town.  You'll hear a specific shout-out to Boyd's Wine and Spirits (yes, we'll take some vodka in exchange for that shout-out!), which Maureen handles their social media.

When you're in need of an affordable hotel— definitely check out My Place Hotels in Rapid City.  The newly constructed building (it's beautiful!) is located at 1612 Discovery Circle, Rapid City, SD 57701 and you can give them a call at 605-791-5800.  Also, check out http://myplacehotels.com/ for more information about My Place Hotels in other cities around the country.

Until next time— cheers!

Episode #8 marks a unique milestone for Dentists, Implants and Worms!  Typically, our guests have included doctors who are friends, colleagues, mentors and classmates of Dr. Moody— but this time, a fan of our show, Dr. Bill Williams, DDS, reached out to us and expressed interest in being a guest.

It was a pleasure getting to know him and discussing the business details behind an established practice.  Previously, our podcast topics have mostly included business practices for the dentist coming out of dental school or dentists who have recently bought into a private practice.  Dr. Williams gives us some insight on how the 40-65 year old dentist can finish strong in his or her career.

Dr. Williams resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry.  He is a published author and serves as a dental advisor/coach under Solstice Dental Advisors in Atlanta.  His number one key to success is to always have 8 cars in the parking lot at 8am.  Sound advice from Dr. Williams!
