THE Joshua Austin from The Accidental Geniuses podcast joins us via Skype for one hell of a podcast.  Of course, we discuss the usual dental BS— but the true content deep in the core of the podcast is when Josh goes into how you can use dental imaging technology for dick pics.  Judging by how NOT CHEAP dental imaging equipment is, they very well may be the worlds most expensive dick pics.

Dr. Joshua Austin is a native San Antonian. After attending Health Careers High School and the University of Texas as an undergrad student, Dr. Austin graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Dental School. UTHSCSA Dental School has been one of the top ranked dental schools in the nation since 1993. Dr. Austin excelled in dental school and was voted president of his graduating class. He capped off a successful senior year by being awarded the Texas Dental Association Outstanding Senior Dental Student award.

Dr. Austin is a member of the prestigious Seattle Study Club, which is a network of professional dental study groups dedicated to ideal comprehensive dental care. Dr. Austin’s other professional memberships include the Academy of General Dentistry, the Texas Dental Association, American Dental Association, and the Rotary Club of San Antonio.

Dr. Austin is a published author and lectures nationally on restorative dentistry and reputation management.  He has a monthly column and weekly e-Newletter in Dental Economics, the most read dental magazine in the world.  In the past, Dr. Austin has served as a faculty member in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at UTHSCSA Dental School. Dr. Austin has received several awards during his dental career.  In 2009, the Texas Dental Association honored Dr. Austin by naming him Young Dentist of the Year.  In 2010, the Texas Academy of General Dentistry named him New Dentist of the Year, the most prestigious award it gives for dentists who have graduated in the previous 7 years.  Dr. Austin has earned a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry by passing an exhaustive written examination and completing over 500 hours of continuing education.  In 2014, Dr. Austin was awarded with a Fellowship in the American College of Dentists for his outstanding commitment to ethics in patient care.

The Worms are back from a brief hiatus and, man, does it feel good to be back!  Thanks for sticking with us through this little break.  Blame Justin's travel schedule and be thankful that Jeff did not decide to go rogue again.

On today's episode, Nick Raithel of Content Corps (aka The Seven Hour Book) explains why every dentist should write and publish their own book using his streamlined process.  It can be a useful marketing tool that is often overlooked and not even attempted by your competition due to the time commitment (or potential costs).

For the whole scoop on Content Corps and what they have to offer, please visit their website at http://contentcorps.net/

From Roy, himself:

Most dentists live in fear of litigation but few worry about going to prison. Nonetheless, I went to prison on August 20, 2008 and was released on May 14, 2010. If you'd like, take a deep breath, hold on, and take a ride with me through a health care providers worst nightmare. Take heart....there are ways to prevent what happened to me from happening to you.

Born in Pennington Gap, VA, I was "raised" on a farm in rural southwest Virginia. Growing up there I learned to love the people and the scenery of the Appalachian Mountains. The second of 4 boys born to a High School agriculture teacher and a registered nurse, working on the farm instilled the importance of hard work. I'm deeply thankful to my parents for the example they set for me. I graduated from Pennington High School in 1973, with honors, and was accepted and enrolled at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville the fall semester of that same year. I was a 1977 graduate of the University of Virginia with a double major in Biology and Religious Studies.  I applied, was accepted to, and enrolled in the dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with honors in 1981, 5th of 115. I returned home in 1981 to start my new practice in my grandfather's hardware store building.

Serving organized dentistry as a former Secretary/Treasurer and President of the southwest Virginia, Component 6, Virginia Dental Association I learned the importance of giving back to the profession. I was honored to be been made a delegate to the Virginia Dental Association's Annual Meeting. I also learned the importance of volunteerism....giving back to my community, state, and world as I had been so richly blessed.  I have served for over 7 years with the various Mission of Mercy projects in Virginia and have been a member of a team of short term missionaries with the Baptist Medical Dental Missions International to Honduras, CA for 10 years. All this happened prior to the voluntary surrender of my dental license for revocation after the conviction and prior to sentencing.

The criminal action began as an investigation by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the FBI in 2003 of the dental practice and myself. To this day, we still do not know what or who initiated the action. I was indicted in October of 2006 after evidence was presented twice to the Grand Jury in the western district of Virginia. I was tried in United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, Roanoke Division in Abingdon. I was found guilty after a 9 day jury trial on March 6, 2008, of Health Care Fraud, Racketeering, Money Laundering, and Structuring. The money laundering convictions were set aside on July 1, 2008. On July 10, 2008, I was sentenced by the Honorable James P. Jones, of the Western District of Virginia to serve 24 months in Federal Prison with an additional 36 months of supervised probation. I am now serving the 36 month of supervised probation. During the sentencing, the prosecution presented witnesses and evidence to establish, support, and "demonstrate the amount of loss sustained by the victims as result of the offense”. Of the payments that I received during the six and a half years reviewed (payments in excess of three and a half million dollars) that loss was determined to be $17,889.57. In addition, I was ordered on March 6, 2008 to forfeit $200,000 as a result of the RICO and Structuring conviction. A penalty of $75,000 were ordered on July 10, 2008. The restitution represents "restitution to each victim in the full amount of each victim’s losses”. The Government began an appeal of the decision in the criminal case; however, has since abandoned that appeal. The criminal case is now final as a matter law.  The government continued their attempts to again prosecute me and the practice via a civil complaint filed on November 6th, 2009.  That action was settled without going  to trial in February 2013.  The civil complaint was based on the same alleged course of action and claims as in the criminal action.  For the time being, there are no pending actions against me, but who knows how long that will continue to be the case?

When someone moves to a new area... they need to find a dentist, especially for their families.  Well, where do they start?  How do they make their choice?  What sort of seemingly little things are being overlooked when it comes to marketing in the information age?

Justin and Gabe are out of town for this one, so Jeff is at the helm with a good friend of his, Thomas Golden, who is a big fan of the podcast, despite not being a dentist.  He knows as much about dentistry as Jeff does, so this should be interesting!

Thomas is a Navy veteran with three kids and a loving wife who have followed him around the country from city to city.  He has had his fair share of dental experiences, which makes him a perfect guest for our podcast!  We've never quite had just a patient on the show.  Usually we have the doctors, the mentors, the scientists, the educators, the marketers, the business managers... but never just a patient to give us some insight.

Take it as you will... if you don't get anything from it, hopefully you were entertained!

Cheers!

From Cory Glenn, himself: "It has been said that if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.  I can honestly say that I have found this to be true of dentistry.   As a dentist in Winchester TN, I feel blessed to be able to combine my love of science and artistic expression into a career that can change people’s lives by restoring their smiles.

I was born in Jonesboro, AR where I lived until completing my undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry at Arkansas State University.  I then attended dental school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  Following graduation in 2008, I went on to do an additional Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency with a focus on comprehensive care and dental implants.  My love of dentistry and desire to excel in it has led me to become a continual student, taking far above the state required 20 hours of education per year (in 2012, I took over 380 hours).

I enjoy collaborating with other dentists on various dental topics and I lecture frequently across the world on the topics of CAD/CAM, conebeam technology and guided dental implants, dental photography, digital smile design, complete dentures, and complex full mouth rehabilitation.

I also hold active memberships in the following organizations:

  • Middle TN Dental Study Club – past Chairman and past Continuing Education Director
  • American Dental Association
  • Academy of General Dentistry
  • American Academy of Implant Dentistry- Associate Fellow
  • American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Southern TN Christian Medical and Dental Association- current Vice president
  • Franklin County One Day Community Outreach Steering Committee
  • Rotary International
  • Gideons International
  • Franklin County Chamber of Commerce

As much as I love dentistry, the role I’m most proud of is being husband to my beautiful wife Amanda and being Daddy to our 3 precious daughters, Allie, Audrey, and Leah.  Amanda is a dental hygienist and maintains an active role in the management of the practice.

On Dec. 26th of 2015, I got  news that forever changed me.  I was diagnosed with Leukemia.  There's  nothing like thinking you're going to die to make you really understand what's important in life.  For me, that was my faith and my family.  I spent the next 8 months doing chemotherapy fighting cancer.  Thankfully, my treatment was successful and I'm now in complete remission but the experience has given me a renewed and much deeper perspective on life.

We are members of Winchester First Baptist Church where I enjoy playing guitar and singing in the praise and worship band.  Outside of family and dentistry, I love to spend time outdoors cycling, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and doing photography.

Part Two continues with David Harris explaining more about the process of prosecuting an embezzler.

Oct 7, 2016

It's a fact: two-thirds of dentists will be embezzlement during their career. Over 6,000 dentists will be embezzled, resulting in over $180 million in losses.  That's pretty scary, right?  Think it can't happen to you?  Think again.  We take a break from our normal shenanigans (and lack of content) to talk about something serious.

David Harris is Prosperident’s Chief Executive Officer.

Overcoming a troubled adolescence, David Harris has become the world’s leading expert on dental office embezzlement. He is the CEO of Prosperident, the world’s largest dental embezzlement investigation firm.

Prosperident’s team of specialized investigators is consulted on hundreds of frauds annually committed against both general dentists and dental specialists. David has had the distinct pleasure of hearing cell doors slam shut on many embezzlers.

David is a CPA and a licensed private investigator.  He has a graduate degree in applied mathematics and is “dual certified” in fraud investigation – he possesses both the Certified Fraud Examiner designation from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Certified in Financial Forensics designation from the American Association of Certified Public Accountants.

David is a Mensa member and belongs to several organizations for dental consultants and speakers.

David has been interviewed on the subject of embezzlement by many leading dental publications and organizations. He is also a prolific writer and authors or co-authors a dozen or more articles annually that appear in major dental publications. David has lectured at several US and Canadian universities in the faculties of business, law and dentistry.

David is a highly entertaining and engaging speaker who draws on a vast amount of experience in his field.  He says that his favorite moment is hearing the noise that a prison cell door makes when it clicks shut on an embezzler.

Want more information about the growing issue of embezzelment in the dental industry?  Definitely e-mail David at david@dentalembezzlement.com and visit his website at www.dentalembezzlement.com before your suspicions turn into reality.

Stay tuned for part two coming up on Tuesday!

On today's podcast, we have Christopher Torres from John Driscoll and Company talking about the importance of Dashboards when it comes to managing your practice's business information.

Our latest guest, Dawn Wehking, loves the shit out of dentistry.  Plain and simple.  Check out Dawn's practice at www.DentistLafayette.com

When you think of your dentist, you probably don’t think about someone who loves to build and create. Dr. Dawn Wehking is a born builder. She loves to build relationships and she loves hands-on work that allows her to build something both structurally sound as well as beautiful.

So then it might not surprise you that Dr. Wehking didn’t grow up wanting to be a dentist. Initially she wanted to own a restaurant because she wanted to build a sense of community and foster relationships with her patrons. But she quickly realized running a local hotspot wouldn’t satisfy her need for creativity and hands-on work.

What she needed was a way to combine her structural and artistic flair with her passion for building relationships and a sense of community. That’s when dentistry became her clear career choice.

When you entrust your dental care to Dr. Wehking, you’ll see she’s creating and building something quite special at Complete Family and Aesthetic Dentistry. She’s building a relationship with you so she understands you and your needs. She’s building a solid team who provides you the best possible care. She’s creating a practice that’s a committed part of the Lafayette community. And she’s creating beautiful, healthy smiles.

Dr. Wehking also strongly believes in building her knowledge through Continuing Education (CE). She completes over 200 hours CE per year and throughout her career she’s totaled over 1200 hours. Recently Dr. Wehking was awarded Fellow status with the Academy of General Dentistry.  She finished the Spear Education curriculum, a place where great dentists go to learn how to be exceptional dentists.  She now serves as visiting faculty at Spear Education. In addition, Dr. Wehking speaks on behalf of the American Dental Association at dental schools across the country, teaching dental students about life after dental school. While it might sound nerdy, Dr. Wehking’s greatest hobby is dentistry. Even when she’s away from the office, Dr Wehking is building.

You see, Dr. Wehking is much more than just a dentist. She’s a smile architect.
(Wondering about the Tooth Fairy’s house in the Complete Family and Aesthetic Dentistry office? Well, Dr. Wehking built that, too.)

This is episode one of our new somewhat informal series focusing on young dentists around the country.  We have an extremely driven, educated and fortunate 29-year-old dentist by the name of Peyman Raissi with us on today's episode.  Make sure you remember his name, because this won't be the first time you hear of this guy.  He's that good!

An immigrant from Tehran, Iran, Peyman was naturally drawn to the world of dentistry at a young age.  Soon, in the midst of his dental education, he found himself practically handed a two million dollar practice.  From there, he put his foot on the gas and hasn't eased off ever since.

Thank you, Peyman, for being on the show!  Check out his website at http://www.mynewsmiledentist.com

If you are a young dentist who is in the middle of your schooling or just getting out and getting into your own practice— we want you on the show!  E-mail us at dentistsimplantsandworms@gmail.com.

The Worms take a moment to reflect on a couple of e-mails that have been sitting in their inbox for sometime now.  No special guest... just Justin, Gabe and Jeff sitting around talking about your questions.  Enjoy!

This is a game changer for the dental world.  We had the opportunity to have Jordan Comstock on the show with us.  He is the founder of BoomCloud, which has a very interesting approach to providing patients with dental benefits, straight from the dentist himself/herself.  Give it a listen... and just think how much of a game changer this is going to be.

55% of Americans don’t have dental insurance. Why compete for the same patients as the dentist down the street when you could tap into a market and cut out insurance companies from decreasing the value of your services and cutting your profits.

With the help of BoomCloud, you now have the opportunity to create an in-house membership program for your patients with no waiting periods. Using our software to organize and create plans, add members to those plans, automate payments and analyze reports. Your practice can now build recurring revenue which increases the value of a practice and allows you to truly care for your patients.

Feel free to reach out to Jordan at jordon@boomcloudapps.com with your questions and comments.  Visit Boom Cloud Apps at www.boomcloudapps.com

Look for a follow-up episode with Jordan sometime in early 2017... we're looking forward to it!
